Book Discussion

Q: What book, books or author most influenced or motivated you to achieve what you have accomplished in your life? Why or how?

A: I was very influenced and motivated by the classic novels that I read during the most impressionable years, from elementary school through college. Such novels as Charles Dickens' David Copperfield and Great Expectations; Edith Wharton's The Age of Innocence; all of Henry James' novels, especially The Portrait of A Lady, The Wings of the Dove, and The Golden Bowl; William Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury, Absalom, Absalom and As I Lay Dying; F. Scott Fitzgerald's luminous novels, including The Great Gatsby and Tender is the Night; and probably my favorite novel, Graham Greene's The Power and the Glory. The way in which these great authors told stories that illuminated human life left an impression that has remained with me and still inspires me to try to write the best stories that I can. I often return to these novels. I have read them many times.
